PRESIDENT #16 – ABRAHAM LINCOLN

Lincoln said about his birthplace: “It can all be condensed into a simple sentence and that sentence you will find in Gray’s Elegy – The short and simple annals of the poor.”

His parents bought the Sinking Spring farm in Hardin County, Kentucky  (348 acres of stony land) for $200 and yes, Abraham was born there in a log cabin. That very log cabin … maybe … probably … well, they think … but maybe not … is still there.

But, it’s not a log cabin in the woods – it’s a HUGE  monument in the woods planned in 1906 by the newly formed Lincoln Farm Association. Members of the Association included Mark Twain and Williams Bryan Jennings.  The cabin is housed inside of the building.

The Sinking Spring grounds are beautiful – but there’s something kind of surreal about being in such a secluded spot and seeing the rather large memorial.

The grounds also includes Sinking Springs itself – this is a picture of Ken walking down to the spring.
