A side note here – we were on our way across the bridge to Chincoteague, ready to look for Misty’s horses (more about that later) when suddenly we said , “Wait! What was that? A NASA space center? Hunh?”
Sure enough – though we couldn’t see much because it was closed. Turns out this was Wallops Flight Facility – a NASA site once 1945. This is a place to launch science and exploration missions for NASA. In fact, there have been 16,000 launches from Wallops.
We were interested and then disappointed to see a sign saying that the next launch was October 28 – we had missed it by just a few weeks.
So, the trip went on … we went home and forgot about Wallops.
Until October 28th when we heard that the Antares Rocket had exploded shortly after takeoff – from Wallops Island. No one was hurt – but a few seconds after the launch, the rocket exploded and fell back to the ground. Alas … I missed THAT photo op!
